Welcome to Poldark! 

Throughout the Summer Term  we will be learning through the overall topics of :

'Famous People through History and Animals Including Humans 

For English, Spelling and Grammar we will read the picture book ‘Wombat Goes Walkabout’. Our lessons will concentrate on the teaching of writing with a sharp focus on the craft and construction of sentences. We will be using immersive teaching to stimulate ideas and using experience lessons can take many forms - visits out, (if and when possible) visitors in (if and when possible) and drama conventions deployed to strengthen context and build imagination.

 In History the children will be learning about Rosa Parks and the influence she has had on events through history and today. The children will be learning to sequence the events that happened in her life. The children will learn how to recognise the difference between the past and present in their own and others’ lives and will be finding answers to simple questions about the past from sources of information e.g. artefacts We will be linking this learning with finding out about where Rosa Parks came from and what America is like in comparison to our own country. During this term we will also be learning about the famous Cornish Athlete Helen Glover. 

In Geography The children will be learning how to find their way! We will be exploring what a map is and what we use maps for. What do the different colours on a map mean? Why do maps have symbols? How do maps show distances which are near and far and what are the four compass directions?

In Maths the children will embed and revise skills in the following core areas: Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Measurement, Geometry and Fractions. 

In Science the children will learn how to identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They learn how to identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. And finally, they learn how to describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals including pets).

Whilst studying Humans, the children will  learn how to identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

Whilst studying Plants, the children will learn how to identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees. They also learn how to identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

In Art Be doing our art lessons in the Art Studio! Mrs Stevens will be teaching us about famous artists as part of our topic and we will be practicing our new colour skills through testing out some new techniques

 In RE we will be looking at the Creation- Who made the World? By then end of this Understanding Christianity Unit the children will be able to:

• Retell the story of creation  from Genesis 1:1–2.3 simply.
• Recognise that ‘Creation’ is the beginning of the ‘big story’ of the Bible.
• Say what the story tells Christians about God, Creation and the world.
• Give at least one example of what Christians do to say thank you to God for the Creation.
• Think, talk and ask questions about living in an amazing world. 

PE will be taught by Mrs Teasdale on either a Thursday or Friday, however, please ensure that children have their PE kit in school at all times as PE may also take place on additional days. This term we will be taking part in Attacking and Defending Mini Games as well as Ball Skills.
